Editors of three major Urdu newspapers of Hyderabad — Siasat, Munsif and Rahnuma-e-Deccan — have launched a campaign to move towards simpler and more austere marriage celebrations, with an “appeal” to their readers. The appeal has been made in consultation with the Ulema and in the light of the Qur’ān and Hadith. The campaign suggests holding the marriage ceremony in mosques, saying no to dowry, limiting festivities to family and those coming from outside town, avoiding lavish dinner parties post-Nikah and sticking to the time set for the ceremonies. ‘Dawat-e-Walima’ — the reception hosted by the boy’s side — should be organised keeping in view “the condition of the poor and deprived, and done simply”, suggests the campaign.
