The Central Bureau of Investigation on 29 May summoned Rajendra Kumar, Joint Director at Intelligence Bureau in Delhi, for questioning over fake staged encounter of IshratJahan and three others at outskirts of Ahmedabad in June 2004. Kumar was then a Joint Director at Intelligence Bureau in Gujarat and supposedly released information that Ishrat and three others were on their way to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The Ahmedabad Metropolitan court and the report of Special Investigation Team had said the encounter was staged. Subsequently, the High Court in Gujarat had ordered a CBI probe into the case in 2011.

Meanwhile, the CBI team and forensic tests denied any cross firing at the crime scene. The forensic report revealed that all the four were killed with an AK-56 and two pistols of 9 mm calibre which the cops had not used in the encounter. The CBI claimed that not a single spent shell fired from their weapons was found from the spot.
