Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju has said websites like Facebook and Google should be ready to face legal action if they fail to remove objectionable content uploaded on them.
“I have seen the content on these sites and found it highly objectionable, and which may disrupt social harmony. If they fail to check this content, they should be ready to face legal action,” Katju said. He said he agreed with Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on the issue of regulating content on such websites. He did not agree with the argument of the sites that it wasn’t possible to remove objectionable content from being uploaded daily.
Katju said he was not a “dictator” when it came to dealing with the media and that he hoped that one day he would be able to convince other members of the council about his viewpoint. And if other council members did not come around to his view, then he would go by majority opinion “as is the practice in a democracy.”
