One more died and five others got severe bullet injuries when police fired indiscriminately on people protesting the death of a youth in Srinagar on June 20. A curfew-like situation is evident in many parts of Srinagar. It is said that the police opened fire to disperse the mob in Waniyar, when a large number of people were returning after the burial rite of Rafiq Bangroo, the teenager who died at the S.K. Institute of Medical Sciences. Rafiq was injured 10 days back during police firing. The mourners took out a procession shouting slogans. Javed Ahmad Mallah, 25, who was injured, died on the way to hospital. Other injured are stated to be critical. Calling the incident ‘barbaric,’ both factions of the Hurriyat Conference urged the people to observe a bandh the following day. JKLF, Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadees and Jamaat-e-Islami J&K also extended support to the strike call.
