Awareness programmes and actions against the perpetrators of child marriage have not been able to put an end to child marriage in Kodakarai, a village situated on a hill in Denkanikottai Taluk in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. “Girls are prevented from going to school on attaining puberty and they are married simultaneously, this is our tradition,” said Rudrappa, one of the villager. Recently, three child marriages were stopped by Collector V.K. Shanmugam. However, his efforts proved futile as the villagers solemnised the weddings at a later date secretly.
