The final state-wise data of the Census 2011, released recently, has registered a steep decline of 14 points in child sex ratio in Uttar Pradesh. Referring to the number of girls between the age of 0 and 6 years for every 1,000 boys, UP’s numbers have dipped from 916 to 902 between the 2001-2011 census period. Though the drop has been felt markedly in rural areas, dipping by 15 points from 921 to 906, urban regions have also seen reduction in child sex ratio by 5 points from 890 to 885. The lopsided sex ratio among children has been felt most keenly in the western districts of UP, with GautamBudh Nagar at 826 girls to 1,000 boys in the rural segment and Meerut at 848 among urban areas. With none of UP’s 71 census districts registering an equal number of girls and boys, the highest child sex ratio was found in Balrampur, where there were 950 girls to 1,000 boys.
