Citizens International strongly condemned the black propaganda generated by the Indonesian police unit Detachment 88 and publicised in the local media with screaming headlines that the respected Indonesian scholar Abu Bakar Bashir allegedly helped fund and support an armed terrorist cell in Acheh. “Detachment 88 is the creation of the American and Australian governments which provide funding and training for its officers. Under the guise of fighting terrorism, it is a tool of these foreign governments to persecute Muslims who stand up for the dignity of the Muslims and the sovereignty of the Indonesian nation,” said S.M. Mohamed Idris, Chairman, Citizens International, Indonesia, in a statement on June 18.

“Again, Detachment 88 seems to be fabricating evidence against Bashir to incarcerate him in jail to satisfy the wishes of its patrons.  We urge the Indonesian Attorney General’s office not to fall into the trap of Detachment 88 and the U.S and Australian intelligence agencies and prosecute the respected ulama. Such an action would serve only to antagonise millions of Muslims and non-Muslims who value justice,” he added.
