In a sharp reaction to Meerut Zone’s Commissioner remark on Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless and greet him) Islamic scholars have lashed out at him for being anti-Muslim and anti-Islam. Mr. L. Venkateshwar said, “Had Prophet Muhammad been alive today, he would have permitted a woman to have two husbands instead of a single husband enjoying four wives.” Maulana Abdul Malik Mugheesi of Milli Council claimed, “This remark is an apt manifestation of his cheap mentality.” President All India Tanzeem Ulema Hind and Assistant Registrar (Academic) of Darul Uloom Deoband (Wakf) Maulana Syed Ahmad Khizar Shah observed, “The Commissioner’s statement shows his absolute ignorance about Islam and Islamic teachings.” He thundered, “Who gave Commissioner the right to speak about Islam.”
In a statement of Darul Uloom Deoband Assistant Rector Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi said, “This (statement) is against the natural law and reason.” Will the Commissioner or any one of his associates permit his wife to have more than one husband?” Member of Deeni Taleemi Council Maulana Riyazul Hasan Nadvi wondered, “How come the Commissioner could not appreciate the simple fact that if a woman enjoys more than one husband then it would be difficult to determine the paternity of the child born out of the wedlock of multiple husbands.” Meanwhile, Meerut Zone Commissioner Mr. L. Venkateshwar has tendered an unconditional apology to the Muslims for his remarks.
