Late on May 7 night, a disturbing incident unfolded on the outskirts of Ahmedabad as a group of vandals targeted the historic dargah of Imam Shah Baba. The 600-year-old shrine witnessed the destruction of graves and the installation of idols, escalating tensions between communities in the area.
The attack, reportedly carried out by a Hindu mob, resulted in heightened communal tension and clashes, with stone pelting leaving four individuals injured. Police swiftly intervened and have detained 30 people thus far in connection with the incident.
According to reports, the graves of Imam Shah and his family members were demolished, prompting Muslims from Pirana village to confront the perpetrators. The situation escalated as both communities gathered at the shrine, leading to heated confrontations.
Ahmedabad SP Omprakash Jat revealed that the shrine’s trust comprises members from both Hindu and Muslim communities, indicating a longstanding dispute over the site. The destruction of the graves was allegedly carried out by Hindu trustees, exacerbating the tension.
As the clashes intensified, law enforcement agencies, including the Local Crime Branch and Special Operations Group, were deployed to patrol the area. Several injuries were reported.
