A legal complaint has been submitted against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over an incident involving a Muslim woman doctor during a public event, said a report published in Jagran. The complaint seeks registration of an FIR at Itki police station in Ranchi district.
Social and political activist Mohammad Murteza Alam led a local delegation to submit the application. The complaint relates to a government appointment letter distribution programme held recently in Bihar. During the event, the Chief Minister allegedly tugged the niqab worn by a Muslim woman doctor present on stage.
According to the complaint, the Chief Minister touched the woman’s hijab and attempted to remove it in full public view. Cameras and a large audience were present at the venue. Video clips of the incident later circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels.
The application describes the act as unconstitutional and degrading. It states the hijab forms an integral part of religious faith and personal privacy for Muslim women. Any physical interference without consent amounts to a violation of religious freedom under Article 25 of the Constitution. The complaint also links the act to an attack on bodily autonomy and dignity.
The complainant stated public office holders carry a responsibility to uphold constitutional values. He added the incident triggered fear and humiliation among women and members of minority communities.
