The Left parties have blamed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre of not keeping the promises made to Indian Muslims for their uplift and welfare. Addressing the rally of National Youth League, Secretary of Communist Party of India D. Raja alleged that the Sachar Committee had revealed the plight of Indian Muslims. The UPA had only made promises but never fulfilled them. It kept assuring that it is implementing the PM’s 15-Point Programme for the development of minorities especially the Muslims but in reality nothing positive has taken place at the ground level during the five-year rule of the UPA. Mr. D. Raja clarified that until and unless the UPA takes some concrete steps for the welfare of Muslims the CPI cannot trust the UPA.

CPI (M) Politburo Member Dr. Sitaram Yechury also accused the Central government of not spending the full amount allocated for the development of minorities. The Central government earmarked Rs. 513 crores for the welfare of the minorities especially the Muslims, however, up till now only Rs. 300 crores have been spent. In Budget 2006 scholarships for the Muslims were announced but still today this scheme has not been implemented.
