Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil on April 8 confirmed in the State Assembly that the Maharashtra Police was in possession of audio tapes comprising conversation of Malegaon bomb blast accused making derogatory references to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and there was a conspiracy to eliminate him. Mr. S.M. Mushrif, former IG Police of Maharashtra, first revealed the existence of such tapes having evidence of conspiracy to kill key figures for creating communal inferno and then overthrow the Government in a chaotic atmosphere.

Reports from Mumbai say that replying to a debate on law and order in the Legislative Assembly, Patil said, “Abusive and derogatory language has been used in the cassette. The conversation also has reference about the use of chemical poison to eliminate a person. The chemical if poured in the footwear of a person may kill him in two to three days. Even the post-mortem will not help to find the cause of death,” Patil said.  He said. “There is a mention in the conversation that Bhagwat is unfit to lead the Hindutva outfit.”

All the accused in the Malegaon bomb blast case (Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, Lt. Col. Purohit, Mahant Dayanand Pandey and others) have links with Abhinav Bharat, a right-wing organisation.

Mr. Mushrif graphically established in his book Who Killed Karkare? (Pharos Media and Publishing House Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi-25) that this group, along with some other radical Hindu outfits, hatched a conspiracy to throw away the democratically elected Government of India and establish an extreme “Brahmanist Hindu Rashtra” in place. It was also revealed by the conversation of conspirators that Israel was in agreement with the conspirators and had promised tactical and material support as claimed by Col. Purohit. Conspirators were also in touch with the then King of Nepal, Gyanendra Shah and were also getting some material support from him. They had also conspired to eliminate some 70-75 prominent persons who may create hurdles in their operation, Mr.   Mushrif has claimed.

During the debate in the Assembly the matter was raised by NCP legislator Jitendra Avhad. He reminded the House that Hindu organisations like Abhinav Bharat and Sanatan Sabha were involved in several bomb blast cases (including blasts in Goa, Dargah Ajmer Shareef, Sankat Mochan Mandir Varanasi, Samjotha Express, Malegaon, Nanded, Prabhani and Aurangabad etc.). The NCP member alleged that Abhinav Bharat and Sanatan Sabha “wanted to eliminate the RSS chief for his alleged inefficacy to safeguard the Hindu interest. Bhagwat had also met the then ATS chief Hemant Karkare in this regard,” Avhad claimed. He said that they planned to “kill Bhagwat and put the blame on ISI.”

If they had succeeded in executing the plan, one can imagine unprecedented communal violence which might have broken out instantly all over the country, and may pave the way to overthrow the Government in the wake of public unrest, anger and mistrust against the rulers.

When Patil was asked what action his Government would take against the conspirators, he merely assured the House that the Home Ministry was investigating the matter and appropriate action would be taken against those involved at “appropriate time”.

Mr. Patil also told the House that the accused in Pune German Bakery bomb blast case were on the police radar and will soon be arrested. “Investigations are being conducted on war footing in complete co-ordination with central agencies and investigators from other parts of the country,” he said. He did not reveal identity of suspected elements as claimed by a section of electronic media. Mr. Patil hoped the accused will be in the net soon but refused to elaborate further saying that it was a national security issue and details would be revealed at the right time.
