Malaysia has developed two types of betting – legal and illegal. After legalising sports betting the officials are worried that a parallel economy of illegal betting, if not curbed, will ruin the ‘benefits’ of the legal betting.   A special task force has been set up to curb illegal online sports betting during World Cup 2010. The task force, called Penggempur, to be led by federal CID director Commander Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin will closely monitor more than four local syndicates believed to be active in sports betting over the years. Police, said Commander Bakri, were also working closely with Interpol to trace the possible links between local syndicates with international groups. Other than Interpol, the police were also working closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multi-media Commission (MCMC) to gather information on Internet gambling. Action will be taken against those found guilty under the Money Laundering Act and Preventive law.
