A fatwa issued by Darul Uloom of Deoband has prohibited Muslims from donating their eyes or getting an eye transplant. In a reply to a query of Qazi Saiyyed Mohammed Sabir of Tajganj, Daul Ifta, the cell that issues fatwa, said on April 25 that since man is not the masters of his body and is only its caretaker, it is not desirable for a Muslim to donate or sell his eyes.

Such a will shall remain illogical and those who carry out such a will after the person’s death will also be considered offenders, the fatwa stated. It said that when the detached organ is transplanted into another person, that specific part of the body becomes useless and impure. The Darul Uloom has, however, stated that in case of emergency situation, blood transfusion can be allowed to save lives.
