The appointment of a Christian as the chief secretary of Chhattisgarh has evoked strong reaction from a Hindu outfit in the BJP-ruled state. Dharma Sena, which has been actively involved in the ‘anti-conversion’ drive that has included violence against Christian missionaries, on August 1 said the appointment has come at a wrong time because the tribal regions of the state are witnessing “rampant religious conversions”. But Vishwa Hindu Parishad isn’t attaching much significance to the appointment of Parambath Joy Oommen, a Christian from Kerala, as the new chief secretary. VHP state president Ramesh Modi reportedly said, “Religion is not an issue in the bureaucracy and the organisation has never interfered in such matters.” He said VHP’s objective is to create awareness among Hindus. He said that while conversion is a social problem, VHP does not believe that bureaucrats have any role in such matters.
