Congress leader Digvijay Singh sought to temper the spirits in SP over Kalyan Singh by reminding it that the BJP leader had presided over the demolition of Babri Masjid. AICC general secretary Singh said, “It should not be forgotten that Kalyan Singh was the chief minister of UP when the mosque was demolished.” The comment on Kalyan, who quit BJP on January 13, is said to be politically loaded as it is likely to be seen as a Congress attempt to pressure the SP for alliance in UP. As for Congress, it has many leaders with strong saffron past in its ranks. However, UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi refused to be drawn into the development except saying that Kalyan Singh’s leaving would further weaken the BJP. “Else, we are talking to SP and the SP is independently allying with Kalyan Singh. Congress has nothing to do with it,” she said.
