The name ‘Islam’ is derived from the word ‘salam’ which means peace. Over a billion Muslims living in the world are guided by the holy Qur’ān and the sayings of the prophet, Sunnah, which unequivocally preach to co-exist peacefully with people of the other faiths. Misinterpretation of Islamic tenets by some rabid forces like Taliban has besmirched the image of Islam…more than the harm that was wrought for centuries by the enemies of Islam. Jaziya was a concept when tax was collected from non-Muslims in lieu of Zakat – mandatory for Muslims. By foolishly whipping the dead horse in the name of Sharia and targeting the Sikh minorities in Swat region of Pakistan, the Taliban has done the utmost disservice to their religion..
