The doctors’ strike in Rajasthan entered into 11th day on Dec. 31, 2011, with patients’ toll rising due to non-availability of medical services. So far, 82 patients have died across the state. Also, as part of the crackdown the state police have arrested around 523 doctors so far. Nearly 9,000 doctors in the government hospitals of Rajasthan, who began the strike on Dec. 21, have been demanding higher wages at par with those employed by the Central government. At present the deadlock continues to persist between the doctors on strike and the state government. State Health Minister Durru Mian had earlier this week urged the striking doctors to call off their strike in the wake of patients suffering. However the poor and the destitute, who have no means to go to private hospitals for treatment have now resorted to selling their lands and properties in order to meet the expenses of private hospitals. Gehlot’s government has so far remained incompetent in controlling the situation and instead of making ways for talks it has started arresting doctors, which will aggravate the situation instead of solving it.
