Dr. Iqbal Masood Nadvi Named Chairman JIH Shari’ah Council

Renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Masood Nadvi has been appointed Chairman of the Shari’ah Council of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

Renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Masood Nadvi has been appointed Chairman of the Shari’ah Council of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

The post of the Council’s chairman was lying vacant after the demise of renowned Islamic scholar and former JIH President Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari in August this year.

JIH President Syed Sadatullah Husaini has approved of the name of Dr. Masood Nadvi after consulting with officials in a meeting.

JIH Secretary Dr. Muhammad Razi-ul-Islam Nadvi is serving as its Secretary. The Shariah Council which was established in April 2019, is a consultative body for offering religious guidance to Muslims.

Maulana Niaz Ahmed Nadvi, head of Dar Al Qada’ Wal Ifta, Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow; Maulana Sabahuddin Malik Qasmi, Vice President of Majlis Ulama-wal Aimma Nawada, Bihar; Dr. Muhammad Faheem Akhtar Nadvi, Professor Department of Islamic Studies Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad; Maulana Muhammad Tahir Madani, Director of Jamiat Al Falah Azamgarh and Dr. Ikramur Rahman Falahi, Darbhanga Bihar have been elected new members of the Shariah Council.

Maulana Dr. Abdullah Jolam Umari Madani, Deputy Director of Jamia Darussalam Oomerabad, Tamil Nadu; Mr. E.V. Saleem Maulvi, former Director Centre for Research and Studies, Jamia Islamia Jamia Islamia Santhapuram, Kerala; Mufti Mohammad Arshad Faruqi, chairman of the Darul Uloom Deoband’s Fatwa Department; Dr. M. Abdul Salam, Rector of Jamia Islamia Santhapuram, Kerala; and Muhiuddin Ghazi, Secretary, JIH Tasneefi Academy are already its members.

Dr. Iqbal Masood Nadvi, who has the authority to confer an Islamic legal ruling, has extensively studied the Islamic sciences at some of the world’s leading institutions of Islamic learning. He spent over a decade at the prestigious seminary Dārul ’Ulūm Nadwatul ‘Ulamā, Lucknow, India, where he completed an ālimiyyah degree. He subsequently moved to Saudi Arabia, where he earned a Licence in Shari’ah from the Islamic University of Madinah (Jāmiʻah al-Islāmīyah bi-al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah), and completed his Masters and Ph.D. in Shari’ah, with specialisation in Fiqh from Umm al-Qura University, Makkah (Jāmiʿat ʾUmm Al-Qurā). In addition to his academic studies, Dr. Nadvi has received ijazāt (certificates of authorisation) from many of the most renowned scholars of our time. To complement his comprehensive education in the Islamic sciences, he earned a degree in political science from Bhopal University, India.
