EGYPTIAN JUDGES REPRIMAND GOVERNMENT

Egypt’s eminent judges and law professors called on the ruling regime to change the present Articles of the Egyptian constitution, amend sections of the law governing the Constitutional Court and to put an end to the meddling in the court of political parties and also in the public life. The move is aimed at ending the government’s direct attacks on the rights and public freedoms of citizens. This came at the end of the first day of the conference organised by the Arab Centre for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) on the assessment of the role of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court. A number of prominent judges and jurisprudent members participated therein. For his part, Chancellor Zakaria Abdel Aziz, Egypt’s former President of the Court of Appeal and Chief of the Judges’ Club called the ruling regime to put a new constitution by judges, legal scholars and specialists to avoid the defects that completely distorted the current Constitution.
