Thousands of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have taken to the streets to demand his return. Protesters gathered at Rabaa Al Adawia square in Cairo on 5 July to call for Morsi to be reinstalled as Egypt’s president. The protesters called for activating the constitution, naming a new prosecutor general and holding parliamentary election within two months. Patriotic songs were booming from loudspeakers amid chants against defence minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and leading opposition figures Mohamed el-Baradei and Hamdeen Sabahi.

Organizers said protesters would march from the square to the Republican Guards headquarters in eastern Cairo, where Morsi is being held. Pro-Morsi protesters also marched from several mosques in Giza and southern Cairo toward the Rabaa Al Adawia square. The Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan), of which Morsi is a member, has vowed peaceful protests against the army’s removal of the Islamist president.
