Excellence of Arafah

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) relates Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) as saying: There is no day when God sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of Arafah. He draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want? (Sahih Muslim)

This hadith brings into light the excellence of the Day of Arafah. There is no day better in the sight of Allah than the Day of Arafah. On this day Allah descends to the nearest heaven, and He is proud of His slaves on earth and says to those in heaven, “Look at My servants. They have come from far and near, with hair dishevelled and faces covered with dust, to seek My mercy, even though they have not seen My chastisement.” This is so as He forgives His slaves in large numbers. How plentiful and blissful Allah’s bounties are!

The Arabic word yubdhi is perhaps meant to show the angels that their misgivings about Adam which they expressed to the Lord at the time of his creation were wrong. The verse 2:30-31 records this conversation between Allah and the angels.

On the Day of Arafah when there stand millions of pilgrims coming from all the corners of the world, Allah asks the angels to see for themselves whether their apprehensions were correct. Now here stand before the Lord not those about whom they apprehended corruption, but the devoted servants of the Great Master, who have undergone the hardships of journey purely for the sake of their Lord.
