What if, your are told that an untrained layperson can provide a compression-only life support (COLS) for management of the victim with cardiopulmonary arrest based on guidelines provided by Indian experts? Professor S Moied Ahmed (Chairperson, Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, J N Medical College—JNMC, Aligarh Muslim University—AMU) with other experts from top medical institutes appointed by Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA) have framed these guidelines and now resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients will not be done on the recommendations of American Heart Association. Bringing accolades to AMU and the country, Prof Ahmed has been busy picking up awards for his exemplary work as a part of the team which framed the guidelines. He was recently conferred with a plaque and a certificate as the prestigious ISA President’s Appreciation Award in Kolkata for the work where he also attended the ISA national conference and conducted a workshop on ‘Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Management of Difficult Airway’. For writing the cardiopulmonary-resuscitation guidelines, Prof Ahmed has also been felicitated with a shawl and a plaque by the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and IMA, Ludhiana. “The concept of framing the guidelines was in accordance to the government campaigns of Make-in-India and Each-one-Save-One,” said Dr Ahmad adding that this will also bring the teaching and training of cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a cheaper cost. These recommendations, launched during the annual conference of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISACON 2017) in Kolkata are on the Compression-only Life Support (COLS) for lay persons outside hospitals, the Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) for medics and paramedics outside hospitals and the Comprehensive Cardiac Life Support (CCLS) for medics and paramedics inside hospitals. ISA is the only body that has framed a separate guideline and algorithm for lay persons. The guidelines have been recommended after discussion among Indian experts and the recommendations modified to ensure its practical applicability across the country.
