For the first time in its post-independence history, the Indian Army has a Muslim General from Kashmir. Major General Mohammed Amin Naik, a resident of Tral, a picturesque township 39 kms south-east from Srinagar, has achieved the distinction recently. Decorated with the Sena Medal for his distinguished service in the Army, Maj. Gen. Amin was commissioned into Corps of Engineers in December 1974 from Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun. During his career spread over nearly three-and-a half decades, he has served as design civil engineer and garrison engineer with Eastern Naval Command.
According to a report, on being elevated to the rank of brigadier, he took posting in Project Hemank, Leh, as Chief Engineer. He is currently posted with the Integrated Defence Staff Headquarters as its Assistant Chief. The officer has represented India in rowing during the 9th and 10th Asian Games, World Rowing Championship in Germany and National Rowing Championship in the UK, Egypt and Laxer.
