Aligarh Muslim University is extending its vistas for the first time in its 136 years history by laying the foundation stone to make the establishment of AMU Murshidabad Centre in West Bengal on September 26, 2010. The West Bengal Government facilitated transfer of 288 acres of Farakha Barage land from Water Resources Ministry to Aligarh Muslim University on September 3 this year and the Government of West Bengal and Aligarh Muslim University jointly decided to hold the Foundation Stone Ceremony at Ahiron, Murshidabad District. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be the Chief Guest of the function. The Chief Minister of Bengal, Budhadeb Bhattacharjee will be laying the foundation while Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, AMU will preside over the function. There is an all round jubilation as people everywhere see the move as opening up of opportunity to have access to world class education at the backward district of Murshidabad which is predominantly inhabitant by minority and other backward communities.
