The book, Muslim League Azadi keBaad, originally published in Urdu in the early 1970s, serves as a rare primary source on the early history of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). It provides insights into the party’s formative years and organisational development.
The author, Late G.M. Banatwalla (1933-2008), needs no introduction. He served the IUML as its national president until his passing. Previously, he held key positions, including General Secretary of the Maharashtra State Committee and member of the National Executive.
Late Banatwalla became actively associated with the IUML in 1959, thanks to the personal initiative of Late C.H. Mohammed Koya, former Chief Minister of Kerala. During the 1960s, BanatwallaSahab often accompanied the IUML founding president, QuaideMillath Mohamed Ismail Sahib (1896-1972), on his North Indian tours. As Ismail Sahib’s translator, he gained first-hand knowledge of the IUML’s early struggles and its efforts to establish a political foothold despite numerous challenges. BanatwallaSahab was twice elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and served seven terms as a Member of Parliament from the Ponnani constituency in Kerala. He was widely respected as an efficient parliamentarian with erudition and eloquence, and as an accomplished writer.
The publication of this work, which authentically presents the IUML’s early history, fulfils a long-felt need. The IUML has consistently championed secular democracy, religious harmony, social justice, and inclusive development. It is imperative to present its legacy accurately within the national discourse. BanatwallaSahab’s work vividly portrays the communitarian essence of the IUML, making this book an essential contribution to its historiography. It is hoped that this book will be received positively and serve as a valuable resource for scholars and readers alike.
Please join with this writer in praying for the eternal peace of late BanatwallaSahab’s pious soul.
