Mr. Anil Shastri, Editor Congress party journal Sandesh, in its latest issue, said, “Muslims should be given greater representation in the party and government. He quoted this keeping an eye on the forthcoming Assembly elections in at least four states, including Maharashtra. In the article “The Minority Swing in Favour of Congress”, Shastri tried to draw attention on how Muslim representation in the government services is unsatisfactory. He said though these services are the most prestigious in India, Muslim presence is poor and therefore reflects their pathetic economic condition. He said if we take the list of officers for all India services, it shows that while Sikhs, Christians and other minorities are doing relatively well, Muslims by and large are lagging in such competitive exams. The Muslim community has a grouse that the constitutional provisions of the right of equality in matters of employment are not being faithfully followed and thus representation of Muslims in government jobs is not proportional to their population in the country, Mr. Shashtri said.
