Palestinian resistance movement Hamas on January 7 denounced a recent announcement by the Israeli Land Authority that it was accepting bids for 380 new settlement units on the outskirts of Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem). An initial plan had proposed 522 new Jewish-only housing units, but the authority later announced bidding on only 380 units. Hamas lawmaker Mariyam Saleh said that Israel aimed to deliver some messages through the announcement. “First is that Israel insists on continuing its settlement activity despite any possible agreement with the Palestinian side that might come out of the current talks,” Saleh said. “The second message, to the Palestinians, shows that Israel is in control of the [negotiation] process and that US Secretary of State John Kerry is nothing but a mediator in an Israeli-controlled process,” she added.
