The State Legislature of Hawaii State of the United States, the birthplace of President Obama, has passed a resolution marking September 24 as Islam Day to recognise the “rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions” of Islam and the Islamic world. The move received worldwide media coverage.  As a follow-up to the Islam Day article that appeared in Hawaii’s Star Bulletin on May 15, 2009 a poll was initiated asking if people approve or disapprove of this resolution. Of the total 17,787 participants in the poll, 10,543 (59.27%) approved of the resolution while the remaining 7,244 (40.73%) said no to the move.
