The Delhi High Court on May 21 directed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to complete its inquiry into the September 19 Batla House encounter within two months. A Division Bench led by Chief Justice A P Shah noted that no headway had been made nine months after the police action. “The NHRC is requested to complete the inquiry and file the report by July 22,” the Bench observed in a written order signed on May 21. “With regard to the fact that nearly nine months have already passed since the incident and that any further delay will prejudice the inquiry, the commission is of the view that it will proceed with the inquiry into the case without insisting on a magisterial inquiry,” the commission had pleaded before the court.
