The Gujarat High Court on July 26 asked the state government to file an affidavit giving details of the disbursal of compensation money among the 2002 riots victims. During the pendency of the PIL filed by Gagan Sethi, a bench headed by chief justice told the Centre as well as the state government to disburse Rs 262 crore among riots victims towards compensation for death, injury and damage to properties.

However, there were some 38-odd victims who did not get the amount. The Ahmedabad District Collector was directed to file an affidavit after completing the process. When the collectorate failed to comply with the order, the division bench asked the state government to file a detailed affidavit showing how much amount was disbursed among the victims and in which category. The court also asked the government to disburse the remaining amount among those who have been left out, after ascertaining their identity. According to the order, if the compensation amount does not reach the victims by the next date of hearing, the state will have to give reasons for that.
