The Union Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, on 30 September, wrote letters to the Chief Ministers of states, asking them to ensure that no innocent Muslim youth was wrongfully detained. He said in his letter the Central Government has been receiving various representations on alleged harassment of innocent Muslim youths by law enforcement agencies. “The Government has to ensure that no innocent person is subjected to undue harassment,” the minister asserted.
Reacting on the letter, Rajiv Pratap Rudy of BJP said it was the gimmick to woo Muslims. “If Shinde had issued the letter without associating the religion of a person, it would not have been an issue….he is dividing the country on communal lines,” stated Rudy. He added that the Home Minister’s letter is completely unconstitutional and questionable.
