Your editorial has an apt comment on the UP election results (Radiance 20-26 May) when you say: “If there is a semblance of cooperation for certain constructive objectives, these 56 MLAs can play a very significant role in UP politics”.
I too join you in the hope that these MLAs can do something through the secular aspects of Islam – call it Islam’s Secular Universalism (ISU) if you wish – in order to be truly useful to the masses of UP, particularly the Poor And the Wretched (PAW), once they acquire a degree of independence while somehow retaining their umbilical connection to the parties that gave them their place under the sun.
This scribe humbly feels that the two independent MLAs can sow the seeds of a new political formation with a work programme responsive to the crying needs of the PAW. The remaining 54 can then accrete to this new formation in a gradual / epochal tectonic move to form a group of God-fearing men, pledged to work for the PAW (no, not for Muslims alone – that would be selfish and hence suicidal) supporting BSP, SP, RLD and UDF but only in the constructive policies of each. This is the most important part initiating some of their own. There will be nothing better if this formation welcomes and actually attracts some constructive Non-Muslims to itself as well!
