Anas bin Malik relates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) said: There are three qualities; whosoever have them may taste the sweetness of faith: first, one who loves Allah and His Messenger above all else; secondly, one who loves someone simply for the sake of Allah; and thirdly, one who returns to disbelief after Allah has rescued him from it, as he abhors being thrown into the fire (of hell).
(Bukhari, Muslim)
Man wants to submit to and love a Supreme Being, but he does not know how. In this hadīth the Blessed Prophet has put it in the right order: one who loves Allah and His Prophet more than all others and loves someone else simply for the sake of Allah can taste the sweetness of faith. His heart lights up with faith and he becomes steadfast.
No doubt, a man loves his parents, wife and children. But the Holy Messenger teaches us the extent of this love. On listening to the call for prayers, the Holy Messenger used to rush to the mosque as if he had nothing to do with them.
If a man finds his child doing something un-Islamic, his love for the child should not bar him from telling the child to do what is due. A steadfast Muslim does not have the company of such friends as run contrary to Islamic teachings.
When a person changes over to Truth from falsehood, he should not backtrack, but stick to his gun, however sufferings he may have to bear.
