The death of Nagaraj Jambagi, the main accused in the Hubli court bomb blast and Singanahalli bomb-planting cases at KIMS hospital in Hubli, left several questions unanswered. Jambagi who was facing trial in several cases of murder, bomb blast, kidnap and extortion, was assaulted to death by none other than his accomplices Basavaraj Roogi and Basavaraj Diggi in Bagalkot jail on July 18 this year. Roogi is from Bagalkot and is alleged to have been associated with Jambagi in bomb blast cases, while Diggi is from Gokak and is an accused to have been actively involved in criminal activities in Gokak of Belgaum district. Claiming to be a Bajrang Dal activist, Jambagi had formed a gang to carry out criminal activities and had sought to gain sympathy from the right-wing activists. Sources said Roogi and Diggi, who were co-accused in several cases with Jambagi, were pressing him to help them get bail from the court and arrange necessary funds for the same. Jambagi, who allegedly had huge amount at his disposal, had been promising them that he would help them. But Jambagi had put a condition that he would manage the bail for the duo if they agreed to eliminate some prominent persons (including some senior police officers) after getting out of the jail. Both Roogi and Diggi, having been frustrated with the condition, were waiting to settle score with Jambagi. Once they realised that he was not really keen on helping them, they decided to retaliate. The duo attacked Jambagi on July 18 with shrapnel, injuring him seriously on the jail premises. Jambagi was admitted to KIMS hospital in Hubli. He succumbed to injuries after battling for life for 45 days.
