A one-day national seminar was held here to discuss the promotion of the Unani system of medicine.
Leading Unani practitioners, professors and research scholars from various parts of India attended the national seminar on Unani medicine organised by All India Unani Tibbi Congress at National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders (NRIUM SD) on December 24.
Unani doctors, Hakeems and research scholars from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar besides Telangana attended the seminar, which discussed various aspects of Unani medicine to promote it at the national level.
Presided over by Prof. (Dr) Mushtaq Ahmed, national president, All India Unani Tibbi Congress (AIUTC), the seminar was also attended by representatives from the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and AYUSH department.
According to the organisers, 250 delegates attended the seminar, including Unani doctors, Hakeems, PG scholars, house surgeons and manufacturers of Unani medicine.
Every year, AIUTC organises such programmes to promote the Unani system of medicines. This was the 45th seminar organised by the Tibbi Congress, which is working to promote and develop the Unani system of medicine.
Unani Tibbi Congress is also working to protect and maintain the honour of the Unani system of medicine and its practitioners and to safeguard the interests and rights of the members.
More than 10 research papers of international standard were presented by doctors and PG scholars of Nizamia Tibbi College and NRIUMSD during the seminar, which discussed clinical research, pharmacological research, drug standardisation and other issues.
Dr Younis Iftikhar Munshi, Director NRIUM SD; Dr Syed Ahmed Khan, National General Secretary, AIUTC; Prof. (Dr) Narayan S. Jadhav, member board of ethics and registration, NCISM; Dr J. Vasanth Rao, additional director, Unani, Department of Ayush; Prof (Dr) S. J. B. Bokhari, principal, Nizamia Tibbi College, Hyderabad; Prof (Dr) MD. Ahsan Farooqui, national president, academic wing, AIUTC; and Dr Ataullah Shareef were among the prominent speakers.
The seminar discussed the current status of Unani medicine at the national level, filling up of Unani vacancies, sanction of new dispensaries, opening of 120-bed Sir Nizamat Jang Hospital at Narayanguda in Hyderabad and regularisation of services of NRHM doctors.
Prof Mushtaq Ahmed said the problems of the Unani system of medicine and its practitioners were presented before representatives of the government departments. He said the Government of India was involved in the seminar.
The issue of Unani system’s representation in NCISM was also taken up. He said a representation was also made at the ministerial level and hoped that the issue would be addressed.
Prof M. A Farooqi of Government Nizamia Tibbi College pointed out that there are several ailments for which the healthcare sector lacks quality treatment. He said in Unani, large-scale research is going on. The research work is being undertaken on Hijama. He mentioned that hundreds of patients at Nizamia Tibbi College and Hospital in Hyderabad are benefiting from this.
One of the sessions during the seminar was ABDM and healthcare professional registration. On this occasion, NCISM took up free registration of BUMS and BAMS doctors.
