Mayor of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Banda Karthika Reddy who attended a women’s conclave on the second day of VHP’s Dharma Prachara Samiti held at Gujarati Pragati Samaj Bhavan, on March 13, attracted the ire of her party’s ally MIM. The programme was organised by VHP, where Praveen Kumar Togadia was also present. MIM leaders including Deputy Mayor Jaffer Hussain, Yasmeen Sultana, Aruna and others carrying placards accused the Mayor of conspiring with communal forces. They marched into the Mayor’s chamber, raising slogans and demanding her resignation.

The Indian Muslim Council-USA (IMC-USA) an advocacy group dedicated towards safeguarding India’s pluralist and tolerant ethos, has also communicated to the Mayor that she publicly denounce communally motivated ideologies of organisations such as the VHP or resign from the Mayoral post.  The IMC-USA also communicated to the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh K. Rosaiah that they take immediate disciplinary action against the Mayor.

The Mayor later clarified that she had attended the function as it was a women’s related one and had no inkling of the presence of Togadia there.
