India is a rising power which has been showing a constant rise in its GDP, however in terms of Human Development Index, India is lagging. Out of 187 countries, India ranks 134. HDI was devised by United Nations Development Programme in the 80s. This incorporates three dimensions of development in relation to human well-being namely a long and healthy life, education and knowledge, and a decent standard of living. The UN report said that India had the world’s largest number of multidimensional poor, more than half of the population, at 612 million. Neighbouring Pakistan was ranked at 145 (0.504) and Bangladesh at 146 (0.500) respectively in terms of HDI. India’s ranking in 2010 was 119 out of 169 countries.
