National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has come out with yet another shocking report of increase in crimes committed in 2010. There is 5 per cent increase in crimes in 2010 when compared with 2009 figures.
Heinous crimes like murder, rape, robbery and crimes against women have recorded steep increase. This phenomenal increase in crime rate brings out the fact that the mental and social health of the nation is not satisfactory and requires urgent corrective measures.
Now hold your breath and read that murder is up by 3 per cent from 32,369 to 33,335 when compared with the last year’s figures. Attempted murders are up by 1.3 per cent, rape cases by 3.6 per cent, robbery up by 4.4. per cent and crimes against women are up by 4.8 per cent.
That is not all, if you have tears prepared to shed them now, and read that kidnapping and abduction cases increased by 13.5 per cent, crimes against children have gone up by 10.3 per cent and crimes against scheduled tribes have shown an increase of 5 per cent.
The report reads like the record book of Devil and is potent enough to cause a heart attack to a thinking soul. Even the Devil would be ashamed to read about this heinous record of human depravation.
Common man feels that his life, honour and property is in constant danger. Women feel more insecure and children have become more vulnerable.
This is an acknowledged fact that our judicial system is inefficient and corruption has crept into it. As regards the law enforcing establishment the less said the better. Criminality, injustice and corruption have struck deep roots in it. A thorough overhaul of these departments is urgently needed.
More attention should be given to removing the causes of crimes than to punishing the criminals. Inculcation of fear of God, accountability to Him, knowledge of our elevated status as human beings and vicegerents of God can surely produce a heightened sense of responsibility in the hearts and minds of citizens. It is the minds of men in which crimes are born, therefore defences against crimes should be built there.
Liberal portrayal of sex and violence in films and Media’s irresponsible. reporting of crimes is also responsible. Therefore these two important institutions Also should be reined in. Will the civil society stand up and take the challenge before it is too late?
