AHMEDABAD POLICE COMMEND MUSLIM MAN FOR ACT OF BROTHERHOOD
In a heartwarming display of humanity, Salim Abdul Sheikh, a resident of Shahpur, received accolades from the city police for his act of brotherhood during the Rath Yatra procession on June 20.Tragically, Sheikh’s wife had passed away due to illness on the very day of the Rath Yatra. Their residence, situated along the procession route, posed a unique challenge. It was essential to transport the body from the hospital to their home and then to the graveyard.Amid the bustling preparations for the Rath Yatra, the police stepped forward to facilitate the transportation of the body. Concerned officers approached Sheikh, seeking information about the burial arrangements.Displaying a sense of understanding, Sheikh decided to keep his wife’s body at home until the Rath Yatra procession passed, a period spanning approximately five hours.In recognition of his act of brotherhood, the police honoured him for his commitment to humanity.
BANGALORE MEDICAL COLLEGE GETS FIRST MUSLIM WOMAN PRINCIPAL
Dr Asima Banu, who has served at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) for 23 years, took charge as the institute’s principal on July 5.She is the first Muslim woman to hold the position at the BMCRI. Having finished her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at BMCRI in the 90s, she took charge as a faculty member in the microbiology department in 2000.Since then she has served in various positions, including quality in-charge and infection control officer, head of the microbiology department at Bowring Hospital, convenor of the medical education unit, nodal officer of the simulation and skills centre at BMCRI, and nodal officer of the Covid ward at Victoria Hospital. She was hailed as Covid warrior for her selfless and valuable contributions during the pandemic.
As the nodal officer during the pandemic, Dr Asima was widely appreciated for her contributions, especially for the personal patient care she provided. It was under her leadership that efforts were made to make the patients feel at home, and the hospital provided amenities such as electric kettles, and stand fans to patients in isolation wards. She also put in additional effort to make sure that all patients were provided with juice tetra packs, nail cutters, toiletries, and other items.She had also started a WhatsApp group with all her patients so that they could message her directly. This had created a direct communication between her and the patients, thus meeting their needs promptly.
PROF. AZHAR NAMED NEW DEAN, FACULTY OF INT’L STUDIES, AMU
Prof. Muhammad Azhar, Department of West Asian and North African Studies, Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed as the Dean, Faculty of International Studies, for a period of two years, with effect from July 7, 2023.Prior to joining AMU in 2003, Prof. Azhar worked as Reader at the Academy of Third World Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He had started his teaching career as Research Associate at the Gulf Studies Programme, Centre of West Asian and African Studies, School of International Studies, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi.He has vast teaching experience and his areas of interest include energy economics, finance and trade, economic cooperation and research and methodology. He has contributed numerous research papers to peer reviewed journals of national and international significance.He has authored two books including “Foreign Investment by Countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council” and “Contemporary Gulf Economies and Indo-Gulf Relations”.
