Grip of religion and morality is loosening on the Indian society and we are sliding into the abyss of sexual anarchy. This is evident from a report on sex habits of Indian youth in six large states of India namely Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, which account for about 40% of Indian population. This report was based on a survey conducted under the aegis of Union Health Ministry which was released by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in February 2010. The size of respondents was about 51,000 married and unmarried young men.
Shockingly 15% of young men and 4% of young women interviewed admitted to having premarital sex. Shameful for a land which still boasts of moral standards, 24% women had premarital sex before age 15 compared to 9% men. Immorality knows no limits: it is born by the fact that around 25% of young men and 21% of young women indulging in reprehensible acts of premarital sex reported sex with more than one partner.
Strangely, more incidence of premarital sex was reported from rural areas than urban areas.
These alarming revelations about the moral health of our upcoming generations make us hang our heads in shame. This calls for urgent measures and corrective action by our religious leaders, social scientists and well wishers of the country. Unfortunately the western culture and legal system allows sex before marriage between two consenting adults. Recently our Chief Justice Mr. K.G. Balakrishnan also gave vent to this pernicious thought that there is nothing wrong in live-in-relationship. Strange indeed from the mouth of a legal luminary who heads the highest palladium of justice.
Responsible sexual behaviour, time-tested moral, legal and social limits set by religion and society are the only guarantee for the well-being of the individual and society. Those who are out to undermine these moral principles in the name of personal freedom are doing utmost harm to the society. They should not only be discouraged but also fought tooth and nail.
Do we the second largest country in the world want to jump into the moral abyss the west has flung itself into? Do we want to destroy the institute of family and reap the evil consequences? Do we want to have single mothers, overburdened women, uncared-for children and reckless and violent young men?
People of wisdom, well-wishers of society! Address this urgent problem and ask the writers, filmmakers and media to stop titillating presentations and glorification of immoral sex and teach the youth to behave properly. Otherwise no one can stop us from sure destruction.
