Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki arrived in Syria for a two-day visit. He conferred with Syrian President Bashar Assad on expansion and consolidation of political ties between the two countries. The two sides also reviewed the latest regional developments along with Iran-Syrian joint economic projects.

Mottaki, who is heading a political delegation, was welcomed at Damascus international airport by his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moualem and Iran’s Ambassador to Syria Mohammad-Hassan Akhtari.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival, Mottaki said, “The visit is taking place at the invitation of al-Moualem to discuss expansion of bilateral ties and regional developments.”

In order to broaden economic ties between Iran and Syria, the two sides are to launch a joint manufacturing line for mass production of buses and trucks.

A plant for the production of “Samand Sedan” in Syria would be turned into a centre for export of automobiles to the region. Samand Sedan is jointly manufactured by Iran and Syria.

On involvement of Iranian companies in running various projects in Syria, the Iranian minister said that a cement factory is to be commissioned in the near future while another project is in its final stages. He listed these projects as production of mirror, train coaches, power plants, water canals and establishment of Iran-Syrian joint bank.
