The President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Syed Sadatullah Husaini has expressed solidarity with the American black community in their fight against injustice and systemic racial discrimination.

In a statement to the media on June 4, the JIH President said: “We condemn the ruthless murder of George Floyd, an unarmed African American at the hands of the officers of the Minneapolis, Minnesota police. We are appalled and outraged by his murder in broad daylight and under full view of the public. We share the grief and convey our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and express solidarity with the American black community in their fight against injustice and systemic racial discrimination. We support the demand for a full investigation into the incident and awarding exemplary punishment to those found guilty of his murder. We support the reforms demanded by the American black community to solve the problem of discrimination and injustice meted out them.”

The Jamaat leader said: “Despite immense progress made by African Americans in their fight for equal rights and to end racial discrimination, the deep-rooted prejudice, and racial hatred in society is still strongly entrenched. It manifests itself in the form of police brutality and discrimination in jobs, housing, education, etc. Jamaat supports calls for police reform and a hate crime bill to hold to account those who insult, intimidate, or threaten a person because of race, religion, and colour. Islam addresses the root cause of discrimination and inequality by declaring that we are all progeny of the same parents and nobody is superior or inferior just because of the colour of his/her skin. Along with legal reform, a change of mindset is required to solve the challenge of racism and inequality.”
