Some anti-social and communal elements on March 16 allegedly attacked the Jamia Masjid in Bendur, Udupi. More than a century old Jamia Masjid is the hallmark of the area. According to the reports, a group of some eight to 10 criminals allegedly barged into the Medical Jamia Mosque and indulged into widespread destruction and looting. Miscreants damaged the floor and ceiling of this historic mosque. The attackers damaged the fans, electric bulbs, tube lights and emergency lights of the mosque as well. The Musalla was thrown into the water tank. The miscreants also desecrated the Holy Qur’an. In fact many copies of the Holy Qur’an have been found missing from the mosque. One year ago the Non-Muslims had objected to Azan on loudspeaker. Hence, Azan on loudspeaker has been stopped. However, on Fridays Muslims from far-flung areas throng this mosque.
