Jaswant Singh moved the Supreme Court challenging the ban imposed by the Gujarat Government on his book, Jinnah: India – Partition – Independence on August 27. Calling it a violation of his fundamental right to speech and expression, Singh said the state government imposed the ban without even going through the book. The notification does not mention any specific passages which the government apparently found objectionable, the petition, in which the publisher Rupa and Co. is also a party, said. The petition further added that it was self-evident that the authorities concerned had not gone through the book, which runs into 669 pages, as the ban came within 48 hours of it being released. Further, it mentioned that the state government had not even stated the backgrounds of its opinions on why it thought that the book needed to be banned. Mr Singh stated that his book was based on historic facts and was a result of five years of extensive research and should not have been banned on the state government’s specious plea.
