The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, on 24 June, wrote to the Governor of Uttarakhand, lamenting over natural calamity in the state which left hundreds dead and thousands stranded. The Ameer wrote in his letter, “I, as the president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, extend my deep concern to all the victims and pray to Allah to lessen their pains and agony.” Referring to the earlier statement of his Secretary General, the Ameer reiterated that the poor strategies and ill-preparedness of the governments to react on such calamities are very much responsible for this catastrophe. He further asked the Governor to ensure safety and security of the stranded pilgrims as well as thinking of their rehabilitation process.
Stressing the need of a capable mechanism to minimise the damage in these types of situations, the Ameer, stated that providing safety and security for a common man is the prime responsibility of the governments. He further urged the government to stop all construction activities near eco-sensitive zones. “…out of devotion or driven by needs, some people construct dwellings on coasts and some even in rivers. The government should take notice of them so as to ensure their safety,” reads the letter. The Ameer also voiced concern over the loot and burglary in temples in flooded area. “… I cannot believe that the humanity came to that end when people are looting the victims and doing inhuman acts with them in the very hours of their need,” says the letter.
