The Kerala zone of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is all set to launch a news channel in February this year. Mediaone, as the channel has been named, would be aired by the Kozhikode-based Madhyamam Broadcasting Corporation; it has a tie-up with Al Jazeera. “We want to develop an alternative media culture as our daily (Madhyamam) has done. Mediaone TV has entered into a tie-up with Arab Broadcaster Al Jazeera, mainly for sharing content on world affairs. The channel would be hived into news and entertainment after six months,” O Abdur Rahman, group editor of Mediaone was reported as saying.
This is the first time a JIH zone is venturing into visual media. The zone publishes a daily newspaper, Madhyamam, and it is counted among one of the most read and circulated newspapers in the state. Its overseas editions are also very popular among Malayalam-speaking reading public in many Gulf countries.
