Jawahar Lal Nehru University Students Union has demanded deprivation points worth five marks for Muslim students as their number in the university is very low. There are only 1012 Muslim students out of its 7502 total students i.e.13.48%. JNU already provides some extra marks in its entrance examinations for girls and other students belonging to the backward community in the name of deprivation points.

An RTI application states that the highest Muslim representation – 8.66% – in JNU is in its School of Social Sciences while Muslim representation in the Schools of Sciences and Languages is 7.59% and 7.6% respectively. The worst Muslim representation recorded in the School of International Studies where they count only 5.8 per cent.

Abdul Hafeez Gandhi, Research Scholar in the same university, says deep study of the information sought through RTI indicates that the Muslim students have been awarded lower marks especially in Viva Voce. He blamed the University Authorities of discriminating in the name of religion.
