A single-judge bench of Gujarat High Court, on 24 June, recused himself from the hearing of a petition of Additional Director General of Police, PP Pandey, in connection with Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. In his petition, Pandey has sought to quash the complaint of CBI naming him as an accused in the case. The petition was listed for hearing before the Bench of Justice SR Brambhatt, who rescued himself on the ground that he had earlier represented one of the two accused police officers as a lawyer. Pandey was Joint Police Commissioner at the time of the encounter.
Meanwhile, the government of Uttar Pradesh, on 24 June, filed an affidavit before a local court in Gorakhpur saying the conviction of Tarique Qasmi in any of the charges against him is not possible because of absence of sufficient evidence.
