As many as nine prominent Muslim organisations in Kerala, on 21 September, met in Kozhikode to discuss the state government’s move to fix the marriageable age of Muslim girls at 18 and concluded that they would approach the Apex Court against the move. The federation of nine organisations for the purpose includes Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Kerala and Muslim League. The federation urged the state government and local bodies not to discourage marriage of Muslim girls before 18 citing separate Muslim laws for marriage and divorce. The organisations also condemned the move of the state government to prosecute the parents of girls who got married before attaining the age of 18 and decided to float an outfit, Muslim Samrakshana Vedi, to launch a campaign against the move.
